12 Ways with Salt Dough !

Hi Friends !!

As the year is coming to a close, I pray, mother nature does not give us all any more, unexpected unpleasant surprises !!

My post today is about the many ways to use Salt Dough.  Salt dough and I go a long way back. When Buddy was 3, nearly 11 years back, I came across a recipe for salt-dough and got hooked to it !!    I find salt-dough as the easiest and most economic way of teaching children and adults to sculpt.  There are several recipes for salt dough if you google it but I prefer to keep the ingredients to the bare minimum.

For my, every 4-Week- workshop, that I conduct, I always keep atleast half a class for salt dough molding and sculpturing. Salt dough can be easily mixed and very easily made.  You can coat a layer of modge podge and then paint it with acrylic paints. If you want it to last longer, and don’t want the paint to fade, I suggest giving it one more coat of modge podge.

Today, I am sharing with you a dozen ways in which you can use Salt Dough.

Salt Dough designs can be shaped either by cookie cutters or freely by modeling and sculpturing the dough.

Oven baked salt dough designs come out, looking like this :-

pice4

1:  Bookmarks :-  A simple design can be hot glued to a tongue depressor and used as a bookmark !!! Doesn’t get easier than that !!

picDSCF2058

2 :  Fridge Magnets

picFotor121580813

3:  Ear rings :- A pair in the same shape with a tiny hole on one of the edges ~ attach a ear ring loop and you have a pair of inexpensive earing to go with every dress you own !!!

picFotor121574439

4:  Pendant The same can be done for a pendant as well.

picDSCF2082

5:  Hair clip :- Adding a hair clip to the base of a flower or heart shaped flat surfaced salt dough = hair clip. Ofcourse you can embellish your hair clip with pearls, glitter, beads etc.

picFotor121572614

6:  Christmas tree ornament :-  Come Christmas and most households encourage their kids making their own ornaments for the tree.

picDSCF2070

7:  Fancy Gift tags:- If you want to make a dramatic statement on the precious gifts you give away ~ why not top up the wrapping with a salt dough tag ??!

picDSCF2072

8:   Figurines for art and craft OR DIY toys. Keep a small blob for every child in birthday party and see them make silly and creative critters from it !

picdscf2053

9:   Plant markers

picDSCF2073

10:   Key Chain :- What a lovely mothers day or fathers day or teachers day gift !!

picFotor121573518

11:  Broach :- the same can be made in the above manner but with a round pin clip.

12  Embellishments for :-

  • decorating photoframes,
  • mixed media projects,
  • to dress naprings
  • even table cloth weights !!

I have shared more than 15 uses of salt dough but ofcourse there are many more ways to use it.  I hope you found some inspiration and would like to give it a try.

I am joining the following parties and sharing these ideas with them :-

Frame from recycled cardboard ~ Tutorial

Hi Friends ,

A lot of times, we rush out to the nearest stores in search of craft items we wish to use in a project. In some cases, it is a must, however in other cases, we can try and improvise with what we have at hand. Today, I am sharing with you how to make a frame out of a regular double layer corrugated cardboard. Ofcourse, I’m sure, there are others who may have thought this one out as well.

BeFunky_DSCF6008.jpg

I made this nearly 6 months back for my youngest sons’ room ~ He is an outgoing boy and his room has quite a dash of bright colors, hence I kept the tone very bright and cheerful colors. Since almost all my projects carry a load of recycled materials and also since I am such a firm believer in “waste not” ~ I have decided to leave a list at the end of my post stating the items which were recycled. Materials required :

  • Double layered corrugated cardboard
  • Hot glue gun / White wood glue
  • Blade or xcto blade
  • Cardstock to cover the frame
  • Embellishments include your choice of beads, buttons, cola caps, ribbons etc
  • If you like, you could distress the edges too with some distress ink.

Recycled :- Bottle cap,  patches of scrapbooking paper, buttons, cardboard !

DSCF1025

Roughly cut a square within the large square piece of cardboard with an sharp blade. Cutting a cardboard may seem relatively easy but you have to be very careful with the pressure and intensity with which you cut with one hand and the position of  the other hand.

 DSCF1028

Settle the cardboard on a large sheet of cardstock ~ I have used a handmade paper due to its strength and durability.

DSCF1029

Mark the center ( roughly) in the square ~ as already marked above and cut out four triangles.

 DSCF1031

Snip off the end of the triangles if its too long. Glue the ends on the backside of the frame. Cut off the corners of the other end of the paper and glue it backwards. The regular white glue or a hot glue gun can be used here.

DSCF1033

Once the papers are all glued the board ~ your frame is ready. After this, its really a matter of dressing up the frame for the party.

I’ve embellished the frame with a couple of pinwheels, the initial of my sons’  name, a bunting using scraps and a paper rosette. This project, totally uses up all your scrap and recycled materials ! Voila ! BeFunky_DSCF2127.jpg I could have given the frame a backing, but I preferred to let it remain empty so that the color from the background would let the shades on the bunting, pop even more.

Notice how the same frame shows up differently in 3 different backgrounds !  Mr E was super excieted to have something “MADE” all for himself. Being the youngest, he is quite accustomed to getting the hand-me-downs 🙂   Although, I did not finish it off with a matt modge podge, I am happy to report that its been over 6 months and all the embellishments look neat and tidy. So there you have it ! I am linking this post to the following parties :-

I’m curious, are all crafters like me, well how about the ones who visit me ?

  1. Do you like to recycle ?  Yes / No
  2. How often do you try to improvise rather than buy brand new stuff ?  Always / Never / sometimes
  3. Do you feel a sense of achievement when you have made something from complete waste ?  Yes / No
  4. Do you feel, sometimes you have gone overboard with collecting stuff to recycle ? Yes / No

For me that’s a ~ YES, ALWAYS, YES, YES  !!! So if you have a similar reply, you just won yourself a twin on the other side of the world !! Thank you for visiting me.   I would love to hear how you liked this ridiculously inexpensive frame ! Have a beautiful day and drive safely please ! 329847D06DC776810690945E262E8BDA

2 things first !!

1). How did you like the new look of the blog ?? Unfortunetly, WordPress does not have a whole lot of quirky, funky or scrapbooking related themes .. this was the closest I got. Love the faux stitch border though and the chocolate brown base color.

2). My husband is going to be operated upon on monday for complications in his remaining kidney so this may be my last post to you’ll for a week, begining Monday, hopefully, if all goes well, then we’ll be back home, and I’ll be posting more of my remaining projects here.

And this project is about : A girl child in my sons class in grade 3, has been the target of alot of indifference and verbal abuse. Sometimes, children can be cruel, they have not mastered the art of diplomacy like we adults have. They see what is real and can be candid and and sometimes very rude.  Manu says they dont talk to her, avoid her in the playground and dislike her for no “ACTUAL” reason. Having witnessed the same for Buddy and sawaabi, I know how this child must feel. There have been instances when  the teacher has  also been annoyed with her becoz she is slow.

I have been acquainted with her family. She is a pretty child, very shy, has a loud voice, speaks english with an asian accent. She yearns for acceptance and longs for someone to be a friend to her from what I hear of her from Manu.  Manu has seen how actively I was involved when his brothers were physically abused in their classes so he keeps wondering and asking me, why I wont do anything for this child.  Manu has been complaining about the treatment met out to her for nearly 6-7 months now.

I wish I could explain that these things are not as simple as this little chap of mine, thinks. They are so complicated. I really wish to help this little girl and I even briefly bought this to the notice of the child’s mother on sports day. Perhaps not as firmly as I should.

Ofcourse Manu, being how he is, has started paying more attention to her, and even baits his classmates to be nice to her, if he shares his lunch with them !

Before the holidays started, we made a pretty little frame for her. It read her name, and the digi stamp by Nikki, Melonheadz was the focus image of a cute little girl angel. (Does’nt she just make amazing digi stamps ???!) I maintained a very spring like feel to this frame so she could keep it for all the seasons.  A large diecut flower with a bright yellow button in the center and a couple of blue glittery butterlfies. Her name on some tags with polka dotted ribbons tied to it. And another lovely digi image of this really awesome sentiment saying “You are Special”

I stuck a note for her from me, telling her how “I” was so proud of her class achievements. We didnt want to address it from Manu, lest they misunderstand.

She was beside herself with joy. Manu was so glad and she kept showing everyone what Eman’s Mom had sent for her. Only problem now, is that He is being cornered for another few more frames for other friends !! Kids, I tell you !!!!! The biggest negotiators on earth !!

Tell me, how do you handle such a situation ? Talk to the parents ? Parents say she does not express herself easily ! Talk to teacher ? He’s going to wonder where ‘ I ‘  fit in the picture ?? Its difficult for me to sit back and do nothing. All children are different. Heck, I have three boys and each reacts in a different manner to a given situation. What do I do ? What would you suggest ?

Here is the picture frame, which is actually a recycled cardboard desk calender frame from 2 years back. Didnt want to dump it coz it never ever got used even when it had the calender stuck to it. Looks as good as new.

Here is that little gift that made the day of a little girl.

Dear friends, I do hope you keep visiting me and perhaps leaving me a line or a note to tell me how you find my works. It really has such a healing effect.

Kindly make a prayer for my darling husband who has endured so much thru out last year with his kidney cancer. He is my answered prayer ! He is such a blessing in all our lives. Please pray for him.

With that note, I bid farewell.

    Much love,

    Altered Frame Project.

Hello friends, I am back from my Umrah in Saudi Arabia. And what a fantastically enlightening pilgrimage it was ! I have the entire story in my other blog, so if your interested, please pop over to view the pictures and read about the short but this amazing trip. (I will be posting it in a day or two.)

Before I left last wednesday, I had completed a project of altering a picture frame into something pleasing. This frame had been sitting in the large ikea bucket for like . . . . forever, until I noticed alittle of dressing up could do it some good. I have also kept the before and after pictures too.

Becoz there is spring in the air and flowers blossoming all over, I decided to embellish this frame with what the flowers attract the most ~ butterflies obviously ! The altered frame has loads of texture with different papers used to punch out butterflies from. Ofcourse I have used the butterfly punch. A matt kraft color for the background against all the bright and loud colors of the butterflies. And again, a very pale floral green is cut to fit a frame behind the images. For whatever reason for me, butterflies symbolize peace, fluttering feelings and softness.  I hope and trust, you guys are going to like the look of this frame. Here it is :

I’d like to enter this project into the following challenges :

I do hope you guys leave me some comments to know how you felt about this creative frame. I know alot of women, dont really like butterflies, but I do. And almost all children that I know of, love butterflies. So I am hoping, you too will find them attractive in this frame.

Please remember, a comment can be the difference between starting the day on a good note or a grumpy one 🙂 (atleast in my case !)

Thank you so much for stopping by and spending some time viewing my projects here. Hope you like them and will return again.

    C ya !

    Recyled CD ~ Best Friend.

Although I had intended on keeping the next 6 posts on the Trash to Wall hanging series,  I am adding this one in too, coz it is afterall a recyled CD. I have transformed many CDs as wall hangings and honestly, it really seems like a shame, having to throw them out. And as many times, as I have made them, each time brings a renewed satisfaction that someone is going to hang it on his wall and feel good about it.

Here, I have used several handmade papers in different textures. Aqua blue and olive green are a first time color combination for me. Never tried this one before. A couple of buttons and a few wooden maple tree leaves. This CD is designed with Men folks in mind. Hence I avoided florals or blingy in there. The sentiment is digi stamp from TLC.

    Hope it does get appreciated.

I have been blessed with one of the nicest men in this world for a husband. I could write a book on him (and it would include mostly all of his qualities with a dash of his clumsiness and this and that and …… ) {You get the picture, right ? }  But dont worry, I am not going there, right now…. phew !

However one of the major reasons, why we have any friction between us, is mainly becoz, when I find something thrown in a healthy state, I prefer to adopt it, thinking I may be able to refurbish it at a later stage and dress it up prettily. {NO I am not a hoarder ~ ok, maybe just a tad bit}  However,”THAT” does not happen all the time. What does, however, happen, is that, I find a suitable space for the said item in my craft studio or the jam packed shed and then …………….. forget about it. (not deliberately forget about it … well my plates full with so many more projects at hand, isnt it ??? )

Now THATS where the problem arises. DH believes in minimilistic living, (he should’ave been born in Japan !!)  while yours truly, hates things thrown out which can serve a purpose at some later stage. Naturally finding that “some stage” is the issue.

Well, I have done him proud on this particular occasion. Couple of weeks back, my car was parked near a construction area, and as we know, constuction areas are a treasure trove for crafters, not cardmakers or scrappers but definetly, crafters. So anyways, here in Dubai, everything is in excess even wastage 🙂  So there were heaps of cardboards and insultation packs thrown around. Thank God, Sam was not around, so I could ask one of the workers permission and just packed a few large white cardboard sheets in the car.

The guy kept looking at me as though I was an alien ~ an abaya laden women comes in a GMC truck and takes “garbage” ….. it would have made news headlines for sure in 7days newspaper.  He kept saying “karabish ~ karabish” meaning trash in Arabic. Silly guy, little did he know what I had in mind for that trash. He couldnt fathom the possibilites of finding a dozen odd uses for that sheet.  But I could.

Why bother to explain to him, that I am doing some good for the environment ?? He couldnt care less for the environment around him.

So anyways, long story short. Turns out that thick large sheet is very light in weight but sturdy enough not to bend or break. Perfect for a altered frames or wall hanging or door signs.

I cannot tell you just how much absolute fun I had, giving a new lease of life to a dead object. I hope you guys like it too. So for the next atleast 6 posts, your going to see the “trash to wall hanging ” series.

This is how that white board was used after alittle sanding, polishing and distressing.

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I have included a picture of the white board, just to give you an idea of what it looked like.  What a joy ! Oh and one of the photographs of the flower pot close up shot, is just : me trying out some new editing for pictures which did not turn out all that great 😦

Please do let me know, if you have ever picked something discarded shamelessly and created something functional with it.

This wall hanging is going to enter the following challenges.

Thank you so much for stopping by, I hope you return again.  Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

    Altered Owl Frame

Hello ladies. I am delighted to have had received such huge appreciation for both the door hanger as well as the shoebox. So glad you guys liked it. This is the third and last one in the Altered series. It is a lovely frame that I picked up in one of the garage sales and it had been resting in between that heap of cardboards and “To be worked on projects” So finally it was selected and boy, did I enjoy dressing it up ! The frame, itself, is sturdy wood and the linings on it are priceless. I did not want to paint it, lest it looses its country charm. So I just embellished it really. Whats even great, is that If I get fed up of the look, I just have to put in another picture inside leaving the ribbon, tag and the flowers as it is, or I could just have it removed becoz I have not hot glued it !! Easy beeezy 🙂

I hav’nt decided whom, I’m going to give this frame to, maybe mom, sister, one of my cousin sisters, a she collegue, one of my girl friends, not decided but its gotta be someone special ofcourse !!

A few pointers about the frame creation.

    • All the images are digi stamps which are the sentiment, the owl, and the heart.
    • The tree shows as a silhouette image  so that it does not reflect as continuity with the frame color.
    • A few metal brads like the 3 stars and the “LOVE” charms on the dry embossed tag.
    •  A cord, a cream ribbon and a large shiffon ribbon tied in a bow.
    • One of the flowers is handmade while the other one is punched. Both adorned with buttons.

I do hope you guys like this one too.
