Christmas Decor – Upcycle a photo frame to a wreath.

Thinking out- of- the- box comes naturally to some, while some of us have to figure out this  thought process.

Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath

I’ve made several frame projects and plenty of wreaths, however, this time, I’m creating a mix of the two !

I love baubles – But who doesn’t  ??

I took a few baubles of various sizes and hot glued them on the back of a picture frame which had a damaged glass. Naturally it was a perfect candidate for my experiment 🙂

The once sad and damaged frame, now has a renewed function ( and friends) !!  It poses in style with its new buddies.

For those of you who visit me regularly, already know, by now, that nothing gives me more pleasure than breathing a new lease of life into old, damaged goods.   Most of my frames are bought at Ikea as is section,  Pan Emirates or  garage sales.   Its a shame that here, in Dubai, we have places where we can donate our clothes, shoes or even books – but there aren’t any places like the  charity stores in the West.  So most of us put up garage sales or join the only flea market available here 😦

What do you do with broken or damaged frames ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this easy and festive creation.

Recycled objects :-

National day crafts to make and decorate

December 2nd is the National Day of United Arab Emirates.

UAE is a diverse country.  It is the central hub for people to meet, work together and develop relationships. This country offers a sense of freedom, security and respect for all beliefs and cultures.

Expats as well as the locals live in perfect harmony here, hence the expats are equally excited and participate in the celebrations, with little children dressed in flag colors and balloons and stickers, badges and sweets being distributed.

From record gathering of flags to breathtaking phenomenal fireworks to fancy luxury cars embossed in national flag colors and bling .. we will be seeing it all !!

While the country is all set for the National day celebration with full pomp and show, I decided to teach my students how to decorate with regular household items to make lovely celebratory decoration and accessories.

We used regular plastic bottles and cut out the base in the shape of a flower. We later applied acrylic paints in the colors of red, green, black and white.  These were then tied up and hung as decoration.
Younger students made these simple trees with various shapes.  The theme centered around the colors used.
We also rolled up newspaper and made these large flowers to stick on the walls.
Work still in progress.
we made the flag out of paper chains.
We bought ribbons of the flag color and cut out “bangles” out of plastic bottle and wrapped it all around the plastic bottle – making a bangle with the flag colors.
We also used nail polish to color “washers” and tied it to these thin ribbons. The kids love accessorizing themselves with these.
How we decorated for National day.
These displayed handicrafts are a part of the UAE culture.  In the olden days, people relied on the resilient Palm tree to provide everything from shade to food to shelter material.  The branches of the palm tree were used to make these baskets, hand fans, bread serving dishes, food mats etc.
The red siting area is just recreated here to show how, in the olden days, they would preferably sit on these hard cushions which can still be found in most homes.
Actually they are quite comfortable.

We wanted to make several more items for the National Day, but felt, slightly limited since all our projects had to have recycled material usage as well as be decorative in nature.

How do you decorate your home, office or school for your National day ?  Do you get your kids involved in the decoration ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked these easy and fun creations.

green christmas ideas – innovative flower light !!

I was thrilled when I got requested to design ornaments, decoration. gift wrapping and lights for Christmas.  As much as I enjoy the festivities involved in any occasion, I believe, the true essence of any religious festival is two folds. Not only does it bring us closer to our own Creator and but it also helps us realize the deeper values, our religion imparts.  It is the one time of the year, when we tend to feel closest to our families and loved ones.  Any occasion with out family presence is really quite a hollow shell 😦  Don’t you agree ?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, consumerism has diluted human emotions and human values.   Its all about brands and image.  Everyone is lining up in the express lane to be fed with Pinterest images and a glamorous instagram existence.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Instagram.  Infact, I am a self-proclaimed, Pinterest addict.   But I don’t let these phenomenal tools take over my entire existence.  I love shabby chic and elegant home decorations but I am frugal.  If I can replicate a certain enticing design, I’ll try it out – OR  just wait for the “sale offer” or “discounted price ”

I’d rather feel overjoyed with a “white Friday” Copic Marker set  than pride myself over an exotic piece of jewelry.  But that’s just how I am and its not necessary that you find my attitude normal.  Infact, you actually might find it bizarre 😉

Ok, so back to today’s project which is Christmas decoration light.

This idea was mainly possible, b’coz just lately while scavenging thru one of my craft tools, I realized I had bought a wood burning tool which had drowned in the tsunami of other craft tools.

I placed several bottles together in a flower shape to decide how many bottles could be attached easily and how much distance is needed between the bottles.  Made markings and used the wood burning tool to burn holes.
It is compulsory to carry out this process outdoors AND STILL WEAR A MASK.
The reason I use wood burning tool is becoz the plastic reacts with heat becoming hard and thick, so that squeezing the funnel mouth later, becomes very easy and the funnels don’t slip or fall off.
These are #MountainDew plastic bottles.  I cut  the bottle into three parts.   The funnel, the slim  “waist” and the base.  The maximum uses generally come from the base, however, here, I am using the “head” or “funnel” part of the bottle.

Finally managed to squeeze all of them on.
I bought decorative tiny lead lights from Ikea from the As Is section for dhs 8 !  I love how the wires crumpled in the center, almost give it a “Real Flower” look.
It was quite difficult to get a “night’ shot of the lights so as to show  just how remarkably the lights lite up..
These can be hung or stuck on the wall.

So what do you think ?

Would you attempt this project ?  I really hope you are inspired to give it a go.

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this frugal simple creation.

Easy Upcycled Photo Frame – DIY tutorial

Hello friends,

Do you like to quill ?  I love quilling and I really like collecting  photo frames as well as  frames for paintings.  This project is an ideal mix of both.

Most of my picture frame collection comes from stores like Pan Emirates,  Home Center, Ikea as is section and garage sales.

I’m almost obsessed with finding potential in unexpected mundane objects which are considered trash. Some projects start immediately, while some bare bones, are stacked in the shed, on a waiting list.

The past two weeks, I have been super inspired to work with frames, so at long last, a pile of photo frames are being repurposed and dressed with some simple and easy art. This one, being the first one.

Our guests are pleasantly surprised when they find out that the creations are my own !

I believe, alittle creativity, color and innovation can transform the ugliest objects into pieces of art.

Here is one Ikea frame which I found in the ‘as is’ section which did not have a glass protection in front.  Ofcourse, I was overjoyed 🙂

It was perfect for my three dimensional quilled heart.

I love the contrast of the white frame against a cardboard background – with pink and red flowers in the foreground.  The pearls were a last minute addition but i feel, they really enhance the look of the flowers.

Infact, I think, I will start a wall gallery for all my art frames projects.

Upcycle Ideas For Photo Frame.

Jewelrydisplay ideas

Hello friends.

So, a couple of months back, when I was hosting the trunk show for my handmade jewelry, I bought a load of display stands/items from a lady who had closed down her Gold Jewelry store. ( Her friend was helping her sell her stands) You can find that collection here : An unbelievable haul.

There were various colors, and in relatively presentable state. (Not the best though)

All those of you, who have ever participated in exhibitions, fairs or small shows, must be all too aware of the importance and hassles involved in merchandising and issues with table space 😦

Most of my newly sourced display items were ‘on the table display’ hence, i had to come up with innovative ideas to display my jewelry in relation

  • with height
  • preferably stand alone pieces

A little bit of juggling, and I managed to upcycle a few things lying around in the house, like –

I love art and picture frames.  I am happy to buy them from stores like Pan Emirates, or  garage sales or Ikea as-is section or even dubizzle.  The maids rooms is choker full with large size frames ! ( luckily we don’t have a maid so that room is ‘converted’ into the art storage.

So anyways, here are how the frames looked.  They are in excellent condition. I just added a back support so that the frames would act as a shadow box without a glass in the front. A couple of nails were also gently tapped on it, so as to hang the necklaces.

I will be sharing a post on all the trunk shows as well as exhibitions, that I participated in, where you will find these darlings displaying my handmade jewelry.

I don’t consider myself all too frugal but I love to upcycle or repurpose – passionately.  I come from a society where upcycling is frowned upon. People who upcycle are considered stingy or cheap.  But in all honesty, I find such a society, people and systems – very shallow.  One has to learn to look beyond today .. we have already flooded dear ol earth with tons of garbage with all the consumerism and commercialization. Isn’t it time, we just wake up and do something about it ??

There are some people who wish to ignore global warming and there are some people who believe its REAL and that we should’ave done something about it ALREADY a few decades back.

I just believe, that each one of us can and should, make a difference – BUT that cumulative effort CAN make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things.  We cannot exhaust our natural resources to fulfill our immediate greed and leave our future generations devoid of basic necessities.  There are places like South Africa who are suffering water shortages already !!

A few years back I was conducting “Save the Environment” workshops where I would visit local schools and educate kids with a complete presentation with facts and figures of how we are depleting our natural resources and how we can come up with simple ways to curb wastage. It was followed by crafts where we repurposed items which are generally dumped.  It was a very gratifying experience. Unfortunately, I got a full time job alittle later and I could not conduct those workshops after that 😦

I believe, positive, constructive and progressive values should be inculcated into children from a tender age.  It should not be a SUBJECT which is studied in their O’levels or A’levels.  If anything, its too late by then 😦

Please do let me have your views too.

Face Qibla.

Hello friends.

It feels wonderful being back after my Ramadhan break.  I am grateful to be alive, in good health and happy to be able to fill you up with my creative endeavors.

Today I am sharing a simple plaque.  The message is the focus, and the message is deep ~ hence I did not want to add any fancy embellishments to distract the essence of this quote.

The definition of Qiblah is the direction of the Kaaba (the sacred building at Mecca), to which Muslims turn to, at prayer.

Muslims all over the world, pray towards the Kaaba, five times a day.  However the meaning of this quote is far deeper than that.

Upcycled Pizza Box into Mixed Media Canvas

Hello friends ! Becoz my sons’ summer holidays as well as the holy month of Ramadhan begins by the end of this month, my posts might be far and few in between from now on.

Today I am sharing with you a mixed media project. I love mixed media (mm) becoz it allows me to experiment without any inhibitions and rules ! I explore with colors, textures and patterns and somehow, it just ties in together.

I, rarely work on a canvas for any of my mm projects ~ being an eco-friendly person, there is always, some effort placed on upcycling or repurposing objects (which can be). Here I have upcycled a pizza box for the mm canvas. I use the back of a pizza box and I love the texture it gives. Two coats of gesso to begin with, and the texture is just so good.

Techniques used are :-

  • Sponging acrylics
  • Decoupage
  • Paper piecing
  • Recycled Pizza box

The quote is dear to my heart. Coz any place in the world is acceptable and bearable, just so long as I am with my husband.  ‘He’ is the best gift Allah swt blessed me with.

I hope you like this attempt.

Easy Spring Wreath from recycled material ~ Tutorial.

Making a wreath does not and cannot get easier than this !!!

This simple wreath is made from cardboard from cartons, magazine paper, some ribbon and a few handmade flowers from paper, a can of spray paint and some hot glue !! This is again one project that is all about RECYCLE, REUSE, REPURPOSE !!

DSCF2008
Cut a cardboard using a bucket rim as stencil and the inside using a large plate. Using a blade make the cut. Apply a thick layer of wood glue and adhere thick stripes of magazine paper rolled up to form a loop. Place the outer circle first followed by the inner circle.

DSCF2009
Once they are all adhered to the wreath, spray paint some color of your desire on it. I have not covered the entire space coz I wanted parts of the print peeping thru the green. Let it dry.

DSCF2317
I made a bunting with some leftover pieces of design paper and ribbon. Adhereing it to the bunting randomly with some hot glue.

DSCF6451
I rolled up some scrap paper and made some flowers and attached them using some hot glue.

DIY Family Organization Board Tutorial.

Dressing up mundane objects with a little color, some craft paper, few embellishments and alittle TLC gives me a lot of creative satisfaction. Ordinarily we tend to throw a lot of packing material, pieces of fabric, and even things that can be easily recycled. But not me 🙂  A large part of the “junk” is cleaned/washed and stored for future projects and ideas. {and then hubby and I quarrel about the amount of “junk” being stacked up in the shed !! ~ sounds familiar ?}

Jokes apart ~ Its one of those things that I so wish to educate kids about. A little change can go a long way in saving the state Mother Earth is in 😦

This project is totally, an upcycle freak’s dream ~ Everything is recycled in this project ! I made this board a couple of days back when felt the need of an organizational board to keep track of some of the engagements, meals, doctors appointments and reminders for the week ahead.

I didn’t need something fancy ~ just something simple and reliable. I dived into my backyard wood stock and came across this thin sheet of cork wood. It seemed to be perfect. Alittle sanding here and there and it was ready for being dressed.

DSCF2011

I’ve always been a sucker for polka dots and I had just the perfect, bright and happy design paper for the background.

I needed a couple of containers to hold pencils, pins, rubberbands etc ~ I reused milk cartons and some laban cartons to do the job.

DSCF2018

With a little spray paint ~ they really perked up. For a more aesthetic look, I added some scraps of the polka dot cardstock and finished off the look with a few tiny clothespin. Has made an immense difference, isn’t it ??

DSCF2058

Next a few clothespin were modge podged with co-ordinating stripes pattern.

DSCF2060

I also placed one old cork coaster for pinning school circulars or reminders.

DSCF2059

I had this title printed off my printer with some fancy font and layered it over a nice textured bright orange handmade paper.

DSCF2061

Assembling the whole board was really quite easy.  Naturally the title went on top while the rest just fell into the place that could leave enough space to pin things, clip things and hold stuff in the containers.  They were all modge podged ( the word is a verb too !!! ) except for the cork coaster and the milk cartons. For those, I decided to use E6000.

Btw ~ do you know that you do get the duplicate of E6000 ? Trust ‘reliable’ China to come up with ANYTHING duplicate. Its E600 and the tube looks almost exactly similar to the original.

Once everything had dried ~ I modge podged over the board along with everything (embellishments ) again. That gave it a really nice and more professional finish.

DSCF2045

And Voila !!!! Two holes were made on the top of the board {goof up :- those holes would look a lot better and less chipped, had I drilled them instead of hammering them } so as to hang it with a cord.

family organization board tutorial

This project took nearly 2 – 3 hours including drying time. And all the materials are recycled so you don’t really have to buy any of the tools or materials. Its readily available in almost all homes.

Do you have an organization board at home ? Would you like to share the picture with me  ?
